Cardiac Ambulance service

UHI as you know it today, started as a simple cardiac clinic at Mulago Hospital in 1958. This journey began when we transitioned from a clinic to a fully-fledged facility i.e Uganda Heart Institute (UHI).

General Information

It is a type of emergency service which provides at least three separate administrations of one or more medications by intravenous push/bolus or by continuous Infusion (excluding crystalloid fluids).

UHI’s cardiac ambulance service is dedicated to providing the following;

Medical transport to patients with Cardiac illnesses which prevent the patient from transporting themselves.

Out-of-hospital acute cardiac care which includes:
• Offering an Advanced Cardiac Life Support
• Supporting breathing and heart functions/activities by use of medical drugs, gases and devices
• Skilled medical treatment during transport to the level of critical/intensive care
• Transport to hospital for definitive care that includes
• Identify cause of Cardiac illnesses e.g. blocked heart vessels (heart attack), dangerously slow hear beat (heart block)
• intervention according to cause e.g. unblocking (stent) the heart vessel, insertion of device (pace maker) that improves the heart beat
• Competent Crew team is committed to the acute care

Our Cardiac Ambulance is comprised of skilled medical staff and quality medical supplies bumped to the level of critical/intensive care. The ambulance also caters for “non-emergency” cases. Such cases may require to obtain treatment or diagnose medical condition and the use of any other means of transport may pose a threat to the health of the patient. Our cardiac ambulance provides perks in providing fast transport hence reducing time delays.

GROUND AMBULANCE (AREA OF COVERAGE)

Our ambulance covers a specific area. Areas include;
• Transfers around Kampala (Central Business District) and a 10km radius.
• Kampala Metropolitan which is in the Central region.

24 HOUR HOLTER MONITORING

A holter monitor is a small battery powered medical device that is used to measure one’s heart activity such as rate and rhythm.

Uganda Heart Institute is offering patients 24 hour monitoring as a continuous test to record heart rate and rhythm. If you are a patient, all you have to do is wear the holter monitor while you do your normal daily activities. This allows the monitor to record your heart for a longer time.

BENEFITS OF A HOLTER MONITOR

The holter monitor shows how your heart functions on a long-term basis.
The recordings made by the monitor help determine if your heart is getting enough oxygen or if the electrical impulses in the heart are delayed or early. (These irregular impulses may be referred to as abnormal heart rhythms.)

If one is already being treated for heart problems, wearing a monitor can help determine if your medicine is working or if changes need to be made.

It can also help see why one might be experiencing other symptoms of irregular heartbeat, such as dizziness, faintness, or feeling like your heart is racing or skipping a beat.
