UHI as you know it today, started as a simple cardiac clinic at Mulago Hospital in 1958. This journey
began when we transitioned from a clinic to a fully-fledged facility i.e Uganda Heart Institute (UHI).
Research Areas
The priority areas of research at UHI were developed in line with the mandate of the UHI as well as the needs of the country taken into consideration. The areas to be covered will include:
Epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases
Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases
Natural history, clinical profiles as well as clinical outcomes of cardiovascular diseases
Healthcare systems in the delivery of cardiovascular services
Disparities in the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cardiovascular diseases
Capacity building
Research Management and Co-ordination
The research department has the role of planning, organization resources, monitoring, implementation and coordinating research activities at UHI. These are regulated and monitored by an independent research and ethics committee. The research activities are extended to involve the staff and students. This research organizational structure aligns research, consultancy services and training function in relation to the UHI’s strategic plans.
Research Dissemination
One of the mandates of UHI is to guide the Ministry of Health, medical training institutions, Ministry of Education, Parliament and the State in the formulation of policies and guidelines in the areas of health education, disease management and prevention in Uganda. The disseminated research will target policy makers, academics, health related organisations and development partners. This information is disseminated through established channels to the intended parties.
Partners and Funding
Collaborations with development partners are crucial in the development and enabling research and researchers reach their goals and objectives. UHI has built strong collaborations and partnerships with both local and international agencies such as Case Western Reserve University, Makerere University, Mbarara University, Joint Clinical Research Centre, Medtronic International and PASCAR. With these partnerships, UHI has been able to mobilize funds and technical assistance to carry out research, host conferences, train researchers and PHDs as well as network within the research world.
