Its vision is to be a global leading provider of super-specialized cardiovascular surgical services. The division has a mission to serve as a global center of excellence in cardiovascular care as well as offer opportunity for research and training.

The ACVSD runs bi-weekly (Tuesday and Thursday) surgical out-patient clinics (SOPC) and conducts both elective and emergency cardiovascular surgical operations. The services are accessible to both local and international patients.

Services offered:

1. OUT-PATIENT SERVICES

Every Tuesday
• AV- shunt clinic (for haemodialysis).
• Peripheral vascular surgery (arterial and venous insufficiency)
• GUCH (Grown-Up Congenital Heart disease).

Every Tuesday and Thursday
• Valvular heart disease clinic
• Aortic aneurysm clinic
• GUCH (Grown-Up Congenital Heart disease) clinic.
• Coronary surgery clinic
• Pericardial disease clinic
• Others: cardiac aneursysms, cardiac tumours and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

IN-PATIENT SERVICES

Cardiac Surgery

• Valve repair and replacement
  • Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • Repair of congenital heart defects in GUCH
  • Pericardial surgery
  • Cardiac aneurysm repair
  • Excision of cardiac tumours
  • Cardiovascular trauma surgery
  • Pulmonary endarterectomy

Aortoiliac Surgery

• Aortoiliac aneurysmectomy and repair (open)
  • TEVAR / EVAR (Endovascular surgery)

Vascular Surgery

• AV shunt creation / takedown – Access for haemodialysis in end-stage renal disease
• Varicose vein ablation / stripping for peripheral venous insufficiency
• Arterial bypass surgery for peripheral arterial insufficiency.

• Arterial embolectomy
  • Excision of cervical paragangliomas

The ACVSD extends technical support to Mulago National Referral Hospital and the national regional referral hospitals in surgical cardiovascular care as well as in the management of complex thoracic surgical disease where cardiovascular compromise is envisaged.

Research

The Institute has set up a registry for aortoiliac aneurysm and is currently conducting studies on this condition in the Ugandan population.

Cost of Services

With the current mandate given to the institute, the ACVSD division offers services at a subsidized cost to the local population. The costing of services can easily be obtained from the accounts department at the out-patient clinic.

In a bid to stay abreast with current trends in surgery the institute is continuously upgrading its services to a state-of-the-art and is in close collaboration with partners abroad in order to achieve this.
