UHI as you know it today, started as a simple cardiac clinic at Mulago Hospital in 1958. This journey began when we transitioned from a clinic to a fully-fledged facility i.e Uganda Heart Institute (UHI).

Dr. James Magara is a futurist with a Doctor of Strategic Leadership from Regent University, Virginia Beach, USA; Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and Management from Uganda Christian University, Mukono; Master of Science in Dental Prosthetics from University of Bristol (UK), and Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He holds an Advanced Leadership Certificate from Haggai Institute in Hawaii, USA; Oak Seed Executive Leadership Training Course Certificate offered by the Institute for National Transformation, and, Sundoulos African Leadership Training Certificate in Servant Leadership.

Dr. Magara has over thirty years’ experience in clinical dentistry, and previously served as a lecturer at the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University for 18 years. He is the proprietor of Jubilee Dental Limited, a dental healthcare provider with service outlets in four locations.

Dr. Magara is a cherished voice on leadership in Uganda and beyond. He has spoken at leadership gatherings on three continents. His passion to see Africa’s immense human capital put to use is evident in his well-researched and provocative book, Positioning Africa in the 21st Century: The Pivotal Role of Leadership and Think Tanks

Ms. Lydia N. Wandera

Ms. Lydia .N. Wandera is a health services Manager by profession with vast experience (over 20years) in Management of Health Services.

Lydia holds a Master of Science degree in Hospital Administration from Uganda Matyrs University Nkozi, a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Social Administration from Makerere University (Mak) and a Diploma in Health services Management from Institute of Public Health Makerere.

Currently Lydia serves as the Senior Hospital Administrator /Head of Administration & Support Services at the Uganda Heart Institute. Lydia is the Secretary to the UHI Board of Directors, a role she took on since November 2017, she is also a member of the Uganda National Association of Hospital Administrators in Uganda.

In her pursuit for improvement of health services delivery, in Uganda, Lydia published an article titled “Workplace violence in selected Regional Referral Hospitals in Uganda”.

Dr. Omagino .O.O. John

Dr. Omagino .O.O. John

Executive Director

Dr. Omagino .O.O. John  is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and Executive Director / Accounting Officer at Uganda Heart Institute (UHI). He is also a member of the UHI Board of Directors and past president of the Uganda Heart Association. He has been a visiting lecturer for over 10 years and has supervised over 50 post-graduate medical research studies at the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Dr. Omagino has been instrumental in establishing cardiac services in Uganda and his life goal is to improve access to cardiac surgery for children and young adults in low and middle-income countries like Uganda. He has received Medals and Awards such as Independence medal, Rotary District 9200, Ministry of Health Outstanding Achievement Award, among others for his outstanding contributions in promoting cardiac care in Uganda.  Dr. Omagino is currently a proud member of the American College of Cardiology.

Mr. Grace Stuart Ndyareeba

Mr. Grace Stuart Ndyareeba is the Managing Director GN Associates (U) Ltd , Financial Sector Specialist Consultants and a retainer Consultant Director at MicroPay (U) Ltd an E-Payment Platform Company powering Agency Banking for a number of Banks in Uganda. He is also a Senior Associate Consultant with Maddison Pine a UK based firm specializing in corporate governance and institutional capacity building. He has provided consultancies to several financial intuitions including the World, IMF, African Development Bank, Bank of Uganda and several financial institutions in Uganda, South Sudan, Ghana and Rwanda. Prior to joining the private sector, Grace worked with the Central Bank (Bank of Uganda) at the rank of Deputy Director, Banks supervision in charge of financial sector safety and soundness.

In addition to consultancies, Grace enjoys a wide wealth of institutional human capital and corporate governance training, is a member and a trainer at the Uganda Institute of Corporate Governance (ICGU) and also a member the Board of Directors of Uganda Heart Institute.

Grace holds post graduate degree MSc. Development Economics (majoring in financial sector management) from the Centre for Development Economics (CDE) Williams College, Massachusetts (USA) in collaboration with University of Colorado at Boulder (1995) and Bachelors of Commerce from Makerere University (majoring in Finance). Additionally, Grace has had several training in financial risk management at various Reserve banks and international training institutions around the globe.

Mrs. Kiwanuka Rosemary

Mrs. Kiwanuka Rosemary

Mrs. Rosemary Kiwanuka is a Registered Nursing Officer with expertise in palliative care.

She holds a BscN, Diploma Business Administration, Clinical Palliative Care Diploma from the IHPCA and Marketeer University.  She was the first palliative Care Nurse in Uganda and also initiated the development of the Advanced Diploma in Palliative Care Nursing.

Mrs. Kiwanuka was the first director of the education department which is now the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa, where she served for over 15 years.

Under her lead, she fostered the development of palliative care  units  in 14 regional referral hospitals and also mentored and supported health care workers to establish 13 stand-alone hospice/palliative care programs all over Uganda.

Currently, Mrs. Kiwanuka is the founding Director of the Palliative care Association of Uganda and also sits on the UHI Board of Directors.

Mr. Peters K. Musoke

Mr. Peters K. Musoke is a senior & second founding Partner of Messrs Shonubi, Musoke and Company, one of the largest law firms in Uganda; founded in 1987. This was after he served as a company secretary for the national housing and construction corporation for over 10 years, from where he garnered a lot of experience and invaluable exposure to government agencies and bodies and how they operate.

Peters has great passion for litigation as a practice area of law and is a leading proponent of mediation as a quick and cheaper means of settling legal disputes. He is a licensed practitioner of law in Uganda for over 30 years now.

Besides being an industrious member of the Uganda Heart Institute Board of Directors, Peters is also the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Kulika Uganda, member of; the Management Committee of the Law Development Centre, International Bar Association, the East Africa Law Society and the Uganda Law Society. He obtained his LLB degree from Makerere University and a Masters Degree in Law (International Business Law) from Manchester University.

Dr. Rosemary Byanyima

Dr. Rosemary Kusaba Byanyima is a Senior Consultant Radiologist and Deputy Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital (MNRH)

She joined MNRH in 1993 as a Medical Officer and later did her Master’s Degree in Medicine in the Diagnostic Radiology at Makerere University. She holds an Executive MBA from Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI).

Dr. Byanyima has held various leadership offices: Head of Radiology Department (2005-2011), Chair of Radiology Department under Muk Faculty of Medicine (2007-2008), and Member of Atomic Energy Council and Uganda Medical Board. She is a Visiting Professor of Radiology for Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and also the Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on Medical Equipment (NACME).

Dr. Charles Akiya Oyoo

Dr. Charles Akiya Oyoo  is the Commissioner Health Services, Non-communicable diseases prevention and control, Ministry of Health. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Makerere University. He also possesses expertise in Public Administration and Management alongside skills in monitoring and evaluation acquired from the Institute of Applied Manpower Research, Narella, New Delhi, India.

Dr. Oyoo has over 20 years of experience in public health-related interventions, including clinical work at primary care levels and management of decentralized health services.  He is passionate about his work and a very strong advocate of the poor and the disadvantaged groups. His main interests are research, governance, leadership and management for effective delivery of public health interventions, with a bias in prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. He is Fellow in governance, leadership and management of decentralized health services.

Prof. Damalie Nakanjako

Professor of Medicine, and Principal of the College of Health Sciences, immediate past Dean of the School of Medicine at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Kampala, Uganda. She holds a Bachelors’ degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), a Master of Medicine MMED in Internal Medicine from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, a PhD from the University of Antwerp, Belgium and a certificate in Leadership and Management in Health from the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. She has over 18 years’ experience in Infectious Diseases care, research and training. She led several research, training and mentorship programs including Makerere University-UVRI Infection and Immunity (MUII) program (as co-director) to build Africa’s capacity for scientific leadership in Infection and Immunity research and the Afya Bora Consortium for global health leadership training in Africa (as country lead). She scientific director of the translational Laboratory at Makerere University’s Infectious Diseases Institute where she gives mentorship and scientific leadership of a translational immunology research group.

Damalie is winner of the 4th Fourth Annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award 2013 in recognition of her contributions towards leadership and health care in Africa. She has mentored over 50 upcoming scientists at masters’, doctoral and post-doc level, to build the next generation of scientists in Africa and worldwide.

Ms. Irene Lugayizi

Ms Irene Lugayizi is an advocate of the High Court and in particular a Legislative Drafts Person, employed by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, where she has served for over 21 years. She is currently Commissioner Legal Drafting (Subsidiary Legislation), in the Department of First Parliamentary Counsel.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Human Rights (MUK), Diploma in Legal Practice, Law Development Centre and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (Hons) (MUK).

She holds in hand several certificates among which are: certificate in  Corporate Governance Training Course for Directors, certificate in Skills Enhancement on Management of the Training Function, certificate in Governance and Anti-Corruption Methods, certificate in Gender Mainstreaming and the Development of Tools and Resources for Gender Analysis in Legislative Drafting, certificate in Gender Equality issued under the auspices of the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, in conjunction with the United Nations Joint Programme on Gender Equality and several certificates in legislative Drafting.

She is a member of professional bodies including the Uganda Law Society and Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA-U).

She is a leader with demonstrable abilities. She is  a member of the Task Force that prepares the self-assessment for Uganda, for purposes of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, a member of the Subcommittee that dealt with Uganda’s responses on the amendment to the International Criminal Court Statute, a member of the Board of Directors Capital Markets Authority, a member of the Technical Committee that services the Policy Coordination Committee of the Presidential Investors Round Table (PIRT), a member of the Task Force on the Amendment of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community and a member of the Rewards and Sanctions Committee, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs among many other leadership positions.
