UHI as you know it today, started as a simple cardiac clinic at Mulago Hospital in 1958. This journey began when we transitioned from a clinic to a fully-fledged facility i.e Uganda Heart Institute (UHI).

General Information

The super specialist in Cardiac Anesthesia is an essential part of the emergency cardiovascular management team and provides anesthesia care for patients with cardiac diseases undergoing cardiac surgery with and without extra corporeal circulation. In addition the super specialist in Cardiac Anesthesia conducts preoperative patient evaluation and interpretation of cardiovascular and other relevant diagnostic test data, hemodynamic and respiratory monitoring, advanced level Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE), management of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), pharmacological and mechanical hemodynamic support, and perioperative critical care including ventilatory support and perioperative pain management.

Cardiac Anesthesia at UHI is evidenced by participation in continuing medical education as well as by involvement in research as it pertains to the care of cardiac patients.

The super specialty training program in Cardiac Anesthesia at UHI is structured to ensure optimal patient care while providing Fellows the opportunity to develop skills in clinical care and judgment, teaching and research.
