Paediatric Cardiac Surgery

The Paediatric Cardiac Division has two Paediatric Cardiac Surgeons and Fellows (training in cardiac surgery), these are supported by a requisite team of Paediatric Cardiologists, Anaesthesiologists, Intensivists, Perfusionists, Physiotherapists and Nurses among others. The division handles children and sometimes adults with congenital heart disease that require surgery. Services for both open and closed heart surgery are available in the Institute.

Common procedures include;
● PDA ligation
● Coarctation repair
● Pericardiectomy
● ASD and VSD closures
● Repair of Tetralogy of Fallot

The above conditions may commonly be referred to as ‘holes in the heart, narrowing of blood vessels, blue babies and all these are carried out in the UHI operating room with modern equipment using the latest technology.

Research and Training
This Division is involved in research, teaching and training at different levels from undergraduate courses to cardiac specialization.
