UHI holds first cardiac fellowships graduation – 30 april, 2021

Kampala – 30th April 2021- Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) celebrates the first Cardiac Fellowships graduation in the Republic of Uganda. A total of 49 Graduands of various super specialized training in over 5 programs have been crowned this morning here at Hotel Africana. This is a great achievement evidenced by the quality of training which is in line with the NDP II strategy of reducing referrals abroad.

Established by an Act of Parliament (The Uganda Heart Institute Act, 2016), UHI is mandated to increase local capacity to handle super specialized cardiovascular services and to empower the Uganda Heart Institute to oversee other public health centers which are not super specialized but which are handling cardiovascular related services.

UHI is now running 7 Fellowship Training Programs namely; Adult Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiology, Cardiac Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesia, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiac Nursing and Catheterization Technology Fellowships. The Institute has trained a total of 49 cardiac specialties.

It is worth noting that  initially, all UHI Staff travelled abroad for training at a very high cost i.e. approximately UGX 400 million per Staff. Currently, a cost of only UGX 100 million is incurred during local (UHI) training. Ministry of Health and the Uganda Heart Institute therefore appreciates the support from the collaborating Institutions that have offered external exposure and high-end training in the areas where UHI still has gaps.

This milestone will greatly benefit the Country in increasing the competitiveness of Uganda’s health sector in the region. The Government is also devoted to providing all desired support to enable more staff acquire comparable skills and continue motivating them to perform their duties diligently.

The success registered by the Uganda Heart Institute today makes us proud as a nation. The Ministry of Health appreciates the UHI Board of Directors, Management and the entire team for flying Uganda’s flag high. Read More
